USAID Cost Proposal: How to Build the Budget

This workshop is available as an English In-person workshop and an English Online workshop.

This workshop equips NGO staff who contribute to developing proposal budgets with background, tools, and practice to support budget development and cost proposal negotiations with USAID. It focuses on how to build an appropriate cost proposal as well as how to maximize cost proposal budgets with the US Government (USAID).

Our expert facilitators work through activities and resources deigned to help you practice the fundamentals of building a budget. This includes developing a category-based budget from an activity budget, formatting a budget according to the Federal Standard Form 424 (Application for Federal Assistance), and how to communicate and justify the cost proposal to your donor.

At the end of this workshop, you can return to your organization with the skills you need to confidently compete for your next USAID Grant or Cooperative Agreement.

By the end of this workshop, learners will be able to:

  • Manage USAID/US Government expectations for cost proposals
  • Determine the necessary costs to include in a budget
  • Comply with the formatting requirements as outlined in USAID Standard Form 424
  • Apply best practices for budget narratives
  • Reconcile the budget narrative to the budget calculations

How does an online workshop work?

The online workshop is open for a set number of weeks, and you can log-in at any time that suits you, and work at your own pace. Once online, you’ll find our platform easy to navigate, with clear guides and instructions.

You’ll need to earn points for completing various tasks (such as watching videos, uploading assignments, and interacting with others). The more tasks you complete, the more points you’ll earn. The quicker you earn these points, the sooner you’ll be able to complete the workshop!

We estimate this workshop requires 2 hours per module (3 modules in total), depending on your pace of learning, and previous experience.
