SEA (Sexual Exploitation and Abuse) Prevention and Investigation

SEA (Sexual Exploitation and Abuse) Prevention and Investigation

This workshop is available as an English In-person workshop.

Sexual exploitation, harassment, and abuse perpetrated by aid workers against the people they have been assigned to serve is one of the most horrific acts of betrayal of humanitarian principles. Equally disturbing is a poor response to allegations of employee sexual misconduct. Organizations seeking to bolster their work in safeguarding must support survivors of abuse and harassment and hold perpetrators accountable.

In this highly participatory workshop, you will learn about effective complaint mechanisms with community input and how to receive and respond to allegations of employee sexual misconduct. Our expert facilitator, a certified human resources professional with extensive safeguarding experience, will provide you with the knowledge on how to effectively plan, manage, and conduct survivor-centered investigations that are objective, fair, confidential, and thorough. You will be guided through the investigation process and will have the opportunity to conduct your own mock investigation. As part of this you will develop an investigation plan, practice interviewing witnesses, determine findings, and develop a final report with conclusions and recommendations.

What will you learn?

By the end of this workshop, learners will be able to:

  • Understand key safeguarding principles and what it means to be survivor centered
  • Receive and assess an allegation
  • Plan, manage, and conduct a survivor-centered investigation including: reviewing evidence and determining factual findings; utilizing tips and guidelines for interviewing witnesses; writing a final investigation report with conclusions and recommendations; determining disciplinary sanctions and corrective measures
  • Create a ‘speak-up’ culture characterized by trust, respect, safety and, accountability
