PSEAH Safeguarding Initiative
PSEAH Safeguarding Initiative
At Humentum, we believe protecting those we serve around the world should be at the heart of every organization’s mission. As should ensuring that our employees are offered a safe, harassment-free environment within our own workplaces.
While the problem of sexual harassment and abuse is widespread in all employment contexts — our sector’s work with highly vulnerable people increases the risk of all forms of abuse of power. It also means we must go beyond what is expected of other sectors in addressing this issue and be very transparent about how we do so to deserve the trust of those we work with, our staff, and our supporters. #AidToo, and the growing number of people who continue to come forward to report abuse, shows that our sector has not been doing enough, and that at times, we have failed.
Our mission and network mean that we have the capability and responsibility to play a leading role in partnership with other relevant organizations in tackling and preventing sexual abuse and exploitation. We aim to help our network and partner organizations develop sector-wide commitments to ethical codes of conduct and associated standards and to directly provide highly practical learning and other forms of support to help organizations achieve the significant changes in behavior and organizational culture that are required. Our ability to offer an integrated and holistic approach will allow ownership of this issue and the necessary changes and improvement to be owned both organizational and sector wide.
Our success with convening different groups from HR to COOs around these topics shows that one of the most successful ways to build your own policies and practices is to take the best practice from work already done. This is a sector-wide issue and we are all addressing it in our own way. Leveraging others experience is the key to making your approach effective. Join the community group and share knowledge and information as well as resources, policies, procedures, training, and donor requests on PSEAH.
Our achievements and expertise in learning coordination and product development mean we can collate, develop and accelerate use of relevant learning resources, tools and processes which organizations can use to strengthen their practice and achieve the changes in behavior and organizational culture required for them to achieve high standards on safeguarding and preventing sexual exploitation and abuse. In early 2021, a new training scheme was announced to improve the quality of safeguarding investigations by NGOs and international agencies. Experts are developing this initiative at the CHS Alliance, a global alliance of humanitarian and development organizations committed to making aid work better for people, in partnership with Humentum. For more information on how this will professionalize how investigations are carried out, check out the link below.
Humentum participates in monthly virtual convenings of a global Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Harassment Community of Practice. In October 2020, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of The Netherlands launched a Community of Practice to strengthen employment accountability, referencing, and screening to prevent the circulation of perpetrators of sexual misconduct in the aid sector. This initiative uses a practical approach based on case studies to identify best practices to prevent the sexual abuse, exploitation, and harassment of those involved in sector programs. The Community of Practice unites experts in law, investigations, human resources, capacity-building, organizational culture, and risk-management from a diverse range of organizations to share proven models and identify structural barriers. In June 2021, the Community of Practice will convene a workshop to complete a roadmap and action plan for next steps.
Our proven consultancy practice allows us to provide in-house support to organizations and will be expanded to address internal areas such as policy development, operational reviews and investigations. In doing so we will help organizations to implement change and achieve high standards. Contact us today to get the support you need to make change happen.
