Assosa Environmental Protection Association - Success Story

AEPA has been one of the partners which have got CSSP capacity development support on strategical financial management as part of the CSSP extension phase in 2017. The main intension of AEPA concerning financing project activities was to chase donor grant and implement project activities to beneficiaries.

From the outset there was no thinking of financial sustainability and organizational sustainability. No thinking of reserve fund. Staffs were not secured in terms of job assurance; there was always thinking of closing of donor of APEA in the minds of everyone’s staff.

AEPA tends to focus on delivering project activities. Due to this reason AEPA has been missed most experienced staff because of end of project activities within specific period. In addition, it was not possible to expand project activities due to lack of funds. Donor funds were not flexible as required to implement unforeseen activities. The fate of AEPA to survive or not survive was in the hands of donors.

Thanks to CSSP through Mango best practices of financial management CD support, today AEPA has equipped with Strategic Financial Management (SFM) techniques and tools. SFM has opened the ear and the eye of AEPA to see the surroundings, APEA’s staff are acquired a lot of experiences, skills and knowledge on SFM to work on imaginative ways of doing business which was not there before.

The support of SFM injects the idea of “possible” to become self-sustained CSO and showed as the money is in AEPA’s hand. Having this in mind, AEPA started to work vigorously and started to knock the door of potential stake holders.  With the help of SFM techniques and tools AEPA has developed 3 years strategic financial document and business plan for moringa processing industry. In addition, AEPA developed reserve plan, identified potential financing options to diversify source of income and also AEPA has developed various policies (Reserve policy, income policy, ethical policy) which helps to guide to arrive at a destination by the end of year three.

AEPA has started to submit the business plan and financial sustainability plan to Irish Aid and DFID to request for start-up capital for IGA of moringa processing industry. They have requested Ethiopian charities and societies Agency for support of vehicle and they have received one vehicle which helps AEPA to facilitate and ease the implementation of project activities.
