Tax Exposure, Risk, and Mitigation in Uganda

While NGOs have become key actors in responding to poverty and related suffering in East Africa and their need is justified, revenue authorities in the region find that levels of compliance have remain a challenge. Complying is costly while the cost of correcting non-compliance is even higher. Come and learn about some of the common tax exposures, risks and the mitigation approaches for NGOs. These include the tax treatment of volunteers and expats, computation of employment income relating to benefits and allowances, processing exemptions from income tax and WHT, and how to deal with VAT exemptions or VAT deemed paid.

Emerging Dynamics And Changes In The Funding Environment For NGOs: Trends, Challenges, And Opportunities

Fostering Learning In A Multi-generational Workforce

For the first time in history, we have 4 generations working side-by-side in the workplace. What does this mean for organizations that must continuously evolve to embrace new skills and technologies in an ever growing and competitive environment? This session will offer insights on how to develop effective learning programs that cater for a multi-generational workforce while at the same time ensuring that learning continues to be effective and taking into consideration the individual learners’ needs.

Participants will leave the session with practical strategies to ensure that learning programs cater to the respective preferred learning styles in a diverse workforce as well as tips to demystify stereotypes, create trust and winning teams in the workplace.

Trends in Legal, Policy and Regulatory Frameworks for NGOs in East Africa

Presenting organization: Wildlife Conservation Society

NGOs in East Africa are faced with mounting challenges: increasing restrictions on NGO registration, operations, freedom of speech. By discussing the current trends in the legal, policy and regulatory framework for NGOs in East Africa, this session hopes to generate a dialogue between representatives of different stakeholders (policy, NGO leadership, government) on finding common ground and options to engage with government regulators.

Attendees will have a better understanding of common concerns and barriers for NGO operations and government policy behind NGO regulations.  Participants will walk away with new ideas for solutions to address regulatory constraints -- through advocacy, engagement with government partners, and sectorial dialogue on compliance.

Beyond The Surface: Exploring The Roots Of Sexual Harassment And Abuse In Organizational Cultures

Sexual violence and sexual harassment within the workplace is an example of toxicity in the organizational culture. The #AidToo movement has highlighted the extent of the problem which is industry-wide. This session will present an anonymized case study, demonstrating it can even be a matter of life or death for those involved.  Presenters and participants will together spend time discussing to identify some of the organizational culture drivers of sexual harassment and abuse such as power imbalances, cultural norms and lack of accountability.

Participants will learn about some of the organizational cultural drivers that allow sexual harassment and abuse to go unchecked. There will be opportunities to discuss the ways in which organization leaders might begin to mitigate and transform these cultural drivers.

Developing A Global Financial Reporting Standard For Nonprofits That Everybody Will Adopt

Presenting organization: Humentum

The session will share the progress and plans on Humentum's initiative to develop a global financial reporting standard for the sector, with rigor from recognized International Standard Setters, extensive consultation with users in the NFP community, buy in from National Accounting Institutes.  The goal of this initiative is to ensure and enable wide adoption and accessible training resources to those who prepare, audit and read such financial statements. From understanding the problem and the historical context, we will move to presenting the plans and progress to date and requesting participants for their ideas and commitment to be involved.

Attendees will leave better understanding the limits of IFRS for SMEs, recognizing the benefits of a global standard and ready to give input and feedback on the drafts during the consultation phase of the project, also ready to adopt and champion the standard once issued.

Leveraging Commercial Sector Partnerships To Expand Program Reach In Resource Constrained Locations

This session will offer insights on how to leverage commercial vendor partnerships to expand program reach in resource constrained environments: It will help participants understand how to make use of relationships to save budget and off budget resources to reach program beneficiaries. It will demonstrate to participants how to make themselves valuable clients in the eyes of your commercial vendors to benefit from their CSR budgets. Lastly, it will demonstrate to procurement and contracting practitioners why it is essential to undertake vendor analysis and development as part of your own organizational growth and sustainability plan.

Financial Management In A Digital Economy: Challenges and Opportunities

This session will cover the impact of information technology on Financial management with a focus on the opportunities and challenges facing Non-Governmental Organizations in striving for excellence in a digital World. This will be done by sharing some best practices from the FHI 360 experience and identifying other best practices from other organizations that have digitized their Financial Management through group discussions. With the new focus by OGAC to increasingly fund local organizations, information technology presents an opportunity for these local organizations to position themselves for excellence and sustainability in an already competitive field through cutting edge Financial management.

After this session, participants will be able to:

Building Trust and Civility Starting from Within

As organizations become more global in scope and more complex in nature, establishing a culture of trust and high workplace civility are becoming more important. As leaders and managers in organizations it is important that we embody, build on and emulate competencies and characteristics necessary for fostering a work environment of high trust and civility. The session will focus on emerging leadership trends, competencies and the factors that strengthen trust at organizational level.  Leadership trends will be taken from a pilot project conducted in 2018 inviting leaders and managers from different African countries to share their leadership challenges, trends and tips.

At the end of the session attendees will:

1. Be aware of the main components crucial for building and/or rebuilding trust 

2. Have discussed emerging leadership trends and their relation to civility and trust in their specific context 

3. Have developed 2- 3 internal actions points for themselves to strengthen trust and civility within their organizations, departments and/or teams

Future of Humanitarian Learning

This session will cover future trends in L&D, including gamification, immersive learning and AI-in-Ed. The session will discuss examples of innovative learning for individuals and organisations working in disaster preparedness and humanitarian response, and highlight early feedback and challenges.

Organizational Health: Thriving in the Midst of Transition

In the face of decreased funding, shifting priorities and restructuring we are seeing staff being made redundant. Consequently morale and trust within the organization has been shaken. This has consequences for the health of the organization and inevitably has a negative knock on effect on the organization's ability to deliver on its commitments to donor organizations. This session will focus on helping organizations to think creatively before, during and after such transitions first, to prepare well, and then, to rebuild trust and staff engagement. Foundational to this, we believe, is establishing the right organisational culture from the beginning, one which has collaborative leadership at the center.

By the end of this session, participants will leave with fresh ideas and new knowledge about organizational culture and building trust during times of transition. Good Financial Grant Practice: How Will it Benefit My Organization?

Presenting organization: The African Academy of Sciences

The financial grant landscape in Africa is faced with a myriad of challenges including the multiplicity of funders and recipients with diverse financial mechanisms, capacity and internal control systems. These challenges often result in, among others, a poor understanding of funders' financial guidelines, risking ineligible expenses and duplication of efforts by funders within recipient organisations such that multiple audits leading to audit fatigue by recipients. This session will provide an understanding of how to achieve compliance to the new pan African standard of Good Financial Grant Practice (GFGP). The GFGP standard, which is supported by an online self-assessment tool covering four grant management practice areas - financial management, human resources, procurement and governance - has been adopted by the African Organization for Standardization to promote the transparency in the use of funds by organisations and mitigate the risk of fraud and corruption.

The Role of Knowledge Management in Promoting Harmonious Labor Relations within an Organization

This session will explore strategies on how to use good Knowledge Management practices, specifically knowledge retention and transfer, to strengthen labor relations in the organization. It also aims to address the question how to inspire staff to drive the organization's vision and mission through knowledge management. Participants will walk away from the session with

Sustaining Learning Agenda Through Longitudinal Learning Questions

How do you ensure learning is consistent within your organization and measure impact?  In this session, speakers from Plan International and Danish Refugee Council will introduce a learning plan to support the organizational learning agenda with practical approaches to achieve learning and development goals even in the context of constrained resources.

Reflections on a USAID Grant that was Terminated, Even Though So Much Was Right

Excellent implementation, fulfilling programmatic expectations, Excellence HR management and having good relationships seemed like it should have been enough. But a small non compliance in the grant can jeopardize an entire programme.
