Dear members, partners, and friends of Humentum,

Last week, I announced internal changes to Humentum so that we can respond to the evolving needs and available resources in the sector. In this period of change and deep uncertainty about the role of the international development community, Humentum is leaning in to help its 300+ members and the sector at large. We aim to address the tough operational issues the sector faces with shared solutions, a common voice, and collective leadership. At the same time, due to softening demand for our training services, we are reducing the size of Humentum’s learning teams in the US and UK, while making increased investments in member convening, benchmarking and advocacy, to better position us for 2020 and beyond.
We are committed to an expanded and accessible convening, conferencing and networking platform for our member organizations and their operations leaders and practitioners. Our emphasis will still include supporting implementers with US Government funding, and supporting our member communities around human resources, learning and development, financial management, grants and donor compliance, business development and risk management. Further, we will bring more support to critical topical issues such as helping the sector address the shared pain points around fraud and aid diversion; preventing sexual harassment, exploitation and abuse; full cost recovery and digital transformation.
We will continue to seek member collaboration and third party funding support for important sector-wide standards and influencing projects such as our recent project announcement about a new non-profit accounting standard. Projects like these are in line with a recent survey of our OpEx DC 2019 participants that showed the high demand for shared standards and systems as well as sharing of best practices.
Training will continue to be an important part of our work, but we are matching our service delivery to demand. In response to shifts over the past two years, we will offer our core USAID compliance courses in over twenty locations globally, and other higher demand courses, in the most-enrolled locations around the world including Washington and Nairobi. To compensate for the reduction of some locations and/or courses in a face-to-face format, we have expanded our online catalog which makes our training and expertise more scalable and accessible. Finally, we will continue to seek member-specific or foundation-funded projects for large scale capacity strengthening of staff and partners on core operational issues.
To make these investments and ensure that we have the financial resources and flexibility to continue to evolve as the sector does, we are eliminating five roles from our learning team both in the US and UK. This is a difficult decision taken with the future in mind. It means saying good-bye to staff and leaders who have been critical to the growth of our Humentum, the development of some of our core learning products, and to the membership community of our legacy organizations (InsideNGO, LINGOs, and Mango). We will be forever grateful to these leaders for the passion, dedication, and insight they have brought to our mission.
Going forward, Humentum will now have a new dedicated team for advocacy, communication, and cross-sector projects and benchmarking led by Tim Boyes-Watson. To better improve service delivery, we are combining our membership and learning teams, already under my leadership, with our consultancy team to bring more coordinated relationship management as well as an increase in knowledge management to our members.
Change isn’t easy, but in this case, it is necessary for us to stay resilient and effective for our member organizations now and in the future. We will honor those who will no longer be working at Humentum with an even more purpose-built team that is ready to support the sector’s critical work now and in the future.
