InsideNGO Announces 2017 Operational Excellence Award Winners

Awards Given at Annual Conference: Framing the Future of NGO Excellence

WASHINGTON – Humentum announced the winners of its 2017 Operational Excellence Awards during its 40th anniversary celebration yesterday, in conjunction with its annual conference, Framing the Future of NGO Excellence. The Operational Excellence Awards recognize individuals working in the sector who are making outstanding contributions to their organizations as operations professionals. This year’s award winners are:

  • Nana K. Frimpong, director of business operations & security services at Social Impact in Arlington, VA, for Excellence in Cross Operations
  • Meredith Cann, program officer at FHI 360 in Washington, DC, recognized with the Emerging Leader Award
  • Emily McLaughlin, HR manager at Nuru International in Irvine, CA, and Kirsten Jacobson, acting director of human resources at Heartland Alliance International in Chicago, IL, tied for the Excellence in Human Resources Award
  • William (Bill) Lester, executive director of NPOKI in Brooklyn, NY, for Excellence in Information Technology
  • Susan (Sue) Lauscher, senior attorney at The Nature Conservancy in Arlington, VA, for Excellence in Legal Services
  • The Budget versus Actual (BvA) Team of the International Rescue Committee, based in New York, for Excellence in Finance, Grants, and Contracts.

“These outstanding individuals bring great value to their mission-driven organizations,” said Humentum President and Chief Executive Officer Tom Dente. “Excellence in operational capabilities is essential in advancing social good. The efforts that professionals in finance, human resources, IT, legal departments, and all key operational areas bring to their work strengthens organizations and ensures that program successes can be expanded and sustained.”

The Humentum Excellence Awards were established in 2010. This year’s winners were chosen from a field of 35 nominations submitted by Humentum member organizations earlier this year. Nominators were asked to submit a detailed nomination explaining how their colleagues embodied operational excellence. The following individuals were cited as honorable mentions:

More than 1,100 development practitioners from nearly 200 member organizations attended Humentum’s annual conference at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center this year, making it one of the largest gatherings of professionals in the international development and humanitarian community in the U.S.


Humentum is a membership association of 330 international non-governmental organizations and sector experts in the international development and relief community working together to achieve global impact. We provide training and learning opportunities, peer-to-peer exchange, sector expertise, and links to industry partners to help our members build their operational and management capacity.
