Humentum Statement on #BlackLivesMatter

Press Release

June 04, 2020

In light of the murders of Black people and the resulting local, national and global protest movements;

In light of the inequalities exposed and exacerbated by the global coronavirus pandemic;

We at Humentum:

  • Condemn the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, and recognize that they represent only three of countless people to be killed by those in power simply for who they are.
  • Condemn all forms of injustice and inequity in the United States and throughout the world.
  • Acknowledge the challenge and importance of identifying meaningful and impactful personal action in the face of global and systemic injustice.

We recommit ourselves to living Humentum’s core values every day. These include being a trusted and transparent partner; being inclusive and collaborative by design in all we do; and inspiring innovative and transformational change across the global development community.

We also recommit to actively operationalizing these values with and for our own staff.  As an organization, we are not yet as diverse and equitable as we seek to be, but we are working hard to foster an internal environment that enables uncomfortable conversations and constructive dissent, while inspiring and applying innovative and compassionate solutions.

None of this is easy – if it were it wouldn’t be a struggle. We will continue to serve our diverse member network to facilitate and realize the exponential power of community. Those who have gone before us have shown us that change is possible, and that collective action provides us with a difficult but navigable path forward.

“Collective action is the way we're going to make progress in gaining social justice. Collective action is how we're going to move the agenda. Collective action is how we're going to leapfrog. Collective action is how we're going to harness the potential that exists on this earth."  – Pape Gaye, Keynote speaker, OpEx Africa Online 2020
